The Fort Pillow State Historic Park Suspension Bridge and Trail Upgrades Project is complete, marking a major milestone for this historic Lauderdale County landmark. The project enhances access, safety, and the overall visitor experience for visitors across Tennessee.
J&S Construction served as the general contractor for the project, delivering key infrastructure improvements with careful attention to environmental stewardship and historical preservation. A centerpiece of the work is the newly completed 360-foot-long suspension bridge, now recognized as the second-longest suspension bridge of its kind in Tennessee. The bridge spans a ravine once used by Confederate soldiers during the 1864 Battle of Fort Pillow, thoughtfully blending modern engineering with the park’s historic terrain.
As part of an enhanced 10-mile loop trail system, the project provides improved access to Civil War-era landmarks, including Confederate breastworks and scenic bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. Visitors can now experience breathtaking views of the Mississippi River while safely navigating the park’s rugged landscape and engaging more deeply with its historical significance.
This project reflects a strong collaborative partnership between Lauderdale County, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), the Department of General Services, and J&S Construction. Together, these efforts strengthen visitor safety, expand accessibility, and preserve Fort Pillow’s unique combination of natural beauty and history for future generations.
